Ketoprofen is US FDA approved NSAID, highly effective to alleviate pain, inflammation, and fever of dairy animals, a potent inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis; it inhibits the biosynthesis of PGE2-a and PGF2-a without affecting the ratio of PGE2-a/PGF2-a. It is well tolerated up to 5 times than the recommended dose for 2-3 times longer than those used for treatment.

Indications

Ketoprofen injection is indicated in arthritis, arthritis, coxitis, dermatitis, post-operative wound & swelling, abscess, myositis and lameness, inflammation due to injury, relieving fever and pain due to acute mastitis, ephemeral fever, the pain of bone and muscle, supportive therapy with antimicrobials, controlling low to medium convulsive pain.

Ketoprofen injection is tested and clinically well tolerated. However, GI upset may occur as similar to those of other NSAIDs.

Precautions

Special care should be taken in case of severe dehydration, hypovolaemia, and hypotension as there is a risk of renal toxicity. Sufficient drinking water must be supplied at all times during or after treatment.

Use in Pregnancy & Lactation

As the effects of Ketoprofen on fertility, pregnancy, or fetal health of horses have not been determined, Ketoprofen injection should not be administered to pregnant mares. It may be given to pregnant and lactating cattle with prior caution.

Drug Interaction
